The Amazing Race Canada recap: "Everybody loves a gay cowboy"
The Amazing Race hit the road last night for its inaugural Canadian edition, which follows nine ridiculously energetic teams as they race across the nation for the chance to win a year of free Air Canada flights, a pair of Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays, and $250,000.
This isn’t exactly The Amazing Race we all know and love, though. The original reality competition is an international travelogue that derives much of its drama from exotic locales, drastic time zone leaps, and difficult language challenges. By limiting the course to within Canada, the most cultural tension we can expect from this edition is an argument between Canucks and Habs fans. Even the contestants seem stereotypically polite, especially now that the only duo to exhibit any edge was the first to get eliminated.
The first Road Block took the teams from Niagara, ON to Kelowna, BC, where they had to dive into Okanagan Lake and search the bottom for a statue of Ogopogo. Married doctors Brett and Holly were the first to complete the task, while identical twins Treena and Tennille and gay cowboys Jamie and Pierre fell into last place after getting lost.
The second Road Block was at the Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park, where a team member had to step over the edge of the Bellevue Trestle, walk to the end of a very shaky plank to grab the clue, and then jump off into the canyon below. BC-based hippies Kristen and Darren were the first complete the task and arrive at the Pit Stop, where they were rewarded with a trip to Sydney, Australia and an Express Pass, which they can use to skip a future challenge. Meanwhile, sisters Treena and Teenile were eliminated after their failure to read instructions resulted in a 30-minute penalty.
It’s still too soon to guess who’s going to win, but here’s where we hope to see the teams end up next week:
Who Should Reach the Pit Stop First:
There are a lot of teams that immediately stand out, including double-amputee Jody and his brother Cory, laid-back bohemians Darren and Kristen, and beefy buds Jet and Dave. But how can we not immediately root for Body Break hosts Hal and Joanne? They’re adorable (even if they don’t seem to understand how car doors work.) I mean, just look at that photo above. They’re fake running! And before Joanne jumped off the plank, she quipped “Keep fit and have fun!” COME ON!
Who Should Get a Fast-Forward:
While Hal and Joanne are early fan favourites, we’d also like to see father-son team Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. catch a break next week. Who didn’t tear up a little when Tim Jr. called his dad, who suffers from Parkinson’s, a hero while watching him inch across that plank?
Who Should Get a U-Turn:
Who Should Be Eliminated:
Sisters Vanessa and Celina are easily the most annoying team on the show. Vanessa almost bailed on the dive challenge because she couldn’t stop freaking out, while Celina snapped at her sister for shouting encouragement during the plank walk. And both girls gloated ungraciously when they got to finish ahead of Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. because of a technicality. Also, did I mention that Celina describes herself as a “bikini model”?
Next week: The teams hit up Vancouver’s Chinatown.
